Do you ever have the urge to stretch? Maybe upon awakening or to work through muscle discomfort? Stretching is necessary and supports mobility and independence. Stretching is best when done slowly and gradually until a comfortable tension is felt, but no pain. Bouncing is discouraged.
Interesting. What’s the big deal? David Nolan, from Massachusetts General Hospital says, “A lot of people don’t understand that stretching has to happen on a regular basis. It should be daily.”
Okay. But who has time for that? With the multitude of priorities and the pace technology supports, do you find it easier to jump to conclusions and just get to the finish line quickly?
When we ignore the simplicity of the basics – like stretching, we become vulnerable to injury. Physically and relationally. Think about the characteristics of an inspirational mentor or leader. What did they do differently? Did they leap into action and blow past stretching? Probably not. Starting first – without stretching reduces our chance of finishing well.
Instead of leaping to conclusions, attempt to stretch gently. Here are a few benefits stretching has to offer:

Whether you are preparing for a walk, a marathon or delivering a presentation to your boss, remember to stretch before you leap. It will raise your awareness and improve your performance. Who knows, it might actually help those around you too.
